It took ten years of life experiences for Shavonne L. Holton to finish her first manuscript, Dating Daddy: Realizing God as Father through Daddy Issues and Bad Romance, in 2016. Once it was completed, she knew it had to be published! That fall, Shavonne wrestled with the decision to either seek out a literary agent to be considered for traditional publishing or to self-publish through a third party company. Both options seemed restrictive and would not afford her the freedom she wanted from the publishing process. On October 4, 2016, she founded VK Press and named it in honor of her maternal grandmother’s (the “V”) lifelong dream of publishing and the resiliency Shavonne developed from her mother (the “K”).

Though her grandmother spoke of publishing countless books about her childhood as a biracial girl born in the 1930’s and the cultural shifts she witnessed in her home town, she passed away in November 2017. It was then that the vision for VK Press became clear: to delve into neighborhood narratives and position their works on a global platform.

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

Where her grandmother inspired the vision for VK Press, the free-spirited nature of Shavonne’s mother influenced the mission. VK Press would maintain the professional standards of larger publishing houses while inviting unique stories and original art.

The mission of VK Press is to serve independent writers and freelance artists through enrichment, book publishing, and literary events that would highlight both the creative and their works. Since its founding, VK Press has hosted social events based on the book themes, designed online self-publishing courses, and launched books from a variety of genres including memoirs, poetry, and juvenile non-fiction. We aim to publish books from each major genre including books written outside of the United States.

Currently, our paperback and hardcover books are distributed through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and various retailers and wholesalers around the world. However, we value our growing relationships in the community and have made autographed copies of our books available in select independent bookstores including:
