You Are Beautiful
Chicago, the place I call home, is known for many things; sports, food, frigid weather, shopping, even shady politics, and violence. However, some people fail to realize its inspiration. Beyond The Lake and skyscrapers, you’ll find nuggets of gold.
Driving down Lake Shore Drive, I saw a sign that was completely uplifting. It was comforting like a hug from my Grannie, warming like a sip of Salted Caramel Mocha and soothing like a good massage. Simple and few in words but yet so powerful; it read, “you are beautiful”. It was the rejuvenation I needed and I didn’t even know it. Those words whispered to me throughout the day.
My wonderful husband often compliments me but seeing that sign had a completely different feeling and meaning. It spoke to my younger self that was told that she was pretty by only followed by “…to be a dark skin girl.” This message was different. It was unconditional. There were no taglines, no suffixes; just a simple YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.
Thank you Chicago, you always know what I need.
